Absenteeism implies an unplanned, disruptive incident due to an employee’s absence from the workplace. Unscheduled absenteeism impacts negatively on an organisation by increasing direct and indirect operational costs, and reducing productivity and competitiveness and ultimately profitability.

Incapacity is the inability, for whatever reason, of an employee to perform the work he or she was employed for. Incapacity encompasses every inability (arising from any cause) that results in the performance of the work being below the appropriate standard or the standard expected by the company. Proper management of incapacity in the workplace ensures retention of skilled labour thereby minimising or eliminating the costs of employing and training new people.
